Drops: Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever

By Andrew Brassington

Melbourne’s Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever have been on a massive high since their early success with the single ‘Clean Slate’ from their debut EP ‘Talk Tight’. March 2017 signifies an important time for the band, releasing their sophomore EP ‘The French Press’ and signing a deal with Sub Pop Records in America, a label responsible for such success stories as Nirvana, Soundgarden and Beach House.

Title track ‘The French Press’ is a rumbling journey down dusty outback roads, taking cues from some of the country’s greatest storytellers with a mentality not unlike that of Paul Kelly, The Go Betweens and The Triffids. The music video for ‘The French Press’ shows the boys take on the role of Wedding band and was shot in one afternoon by up-and-coming director Jamieson Moore.

Highlight ‘Sick Bug’ opens with a riff that could’ve come straight from the Midnight Oil songbook followed by dazzling wavy chords that weave into the footstomping chorus of ‘I want you I want you I want you’, and ends with some gorgeous arpeggios.

You’d be forgiven for thinking ‘Dig Up’ was actually a Paul Kelly song and ‘Fountain of Good Fortune’ was written by the great Robert Forster. It’s icons like these that a lot of young Australian bands look up to nowadays, and their influence is hugely beneficial.

Hooky guitar melodies and singalong chorus’ are scattered across the EP. This is not country music, but it is music for the country that reflects Australia’s harshness. It’s a little rough around the edges, on purpose, but so is Australia. There’s such a laidback feel to everything they do but it still maintains a sense of urgency, which seems to be an integral characteristic of Australian rock music. These songs would not sound of place in a tiny outback pub on a Sunday arvo.
