Drops: The Griswolds

By Portia Hampson

Sydney indie rock, four-piece, The Griswolds, have dropped a new single “Role Models” from their sophomore album ‘High Times for Low Lives’ and have finally announced they will be hitting the road again to tour Australia.

“Role Models” features The Griswolds signature unapologetic energy, with catchy pop vocals layered over edgy synths, sharp samples and syncopated claps.

The tune was written in isolation about 2 hours north of Sydney and produced in Los Angeles by the phenomenal, Grammy award winning producer Andrew Dawson.

Front man Chris Whitehall expressed his confusion on fans complimenting they ‘look up’ to them.

“It’s a really strange and beautiful thing when people say they look up to you or you inspire them. I remember thinking one day “Us? Role models? Hell no, no one should be looking up to us” So I wrote down that lyric “we ain’t your role models”.

‘High Times for Low Lives’ is currently out now! Order the album here

Pass the Mic: American Doubles

By Gabrielle Zgrajewski

Debuting their single “The Swell” last week, American Doubles, a Melbourne duo have struck the music scene with a flurry of 80’s synth pop.

As American Doubles have been in the playing cards for Rob Smith and Justin Hamilton since 2010, the pair finally created the music that was meant to be, starting in a home studio in St Kilda.

Growing up listening to a ‘new wave’ sound of electronic 80’s pop, this has been highly recycled into their single “The Swell” as well as incorporating live instruments such as vocals and guitar, making the song its own. Artists similar to this sound include Manchester band The 1975 and Scottish synth band Chvrches.

Inspired by Rob’s childhood, it reflects his childhood, exploring the depths of the ocean at Cape Paterson as well as simply floating in the swell.

“The Swell” can only be described as ‘wavy’ with its flowing beat, which is reflective within the music video.

The music video of “The Swell” features a bar which seems completely ethereal and out of this world due to it being based completely underwater. As it shows a peaceful oceanic experience, it captures of freedom and experience of childhood and exploration.

As for more music from American Doubles, there is a planned EP with 5 songs including “The Swell”. As well, the boys are planning to gig around Melbourne and hopefully do a East Coast tour up to Sydney and Brisbane, and a regional tour around Victoria.

Drops: Tunnel Signs & Will Buck

By Madelaine Hopkins

New York City based Australian producer Tunnel Signs, real name Ash Moses, has teamed up with Will Buck to release their first track with Cutters Records.

“Spirits” is a tribal percussion driven tune that includes some staccato vocals, modulated synths and undulating bass patterns all wrapped up with a bubbling, hypnotic groove. It’s the kind of track that’s perfect for the suave, contemporary bar that’s packed out with cool youngins, and makes you feel like you’re at a party in the jungle.

An acid coated, darker rework of the track by Marc Pinol has also been released alongside the original.

The three-piece band hailing from Los Angeles has created yet another heavenly tune. The single is a taste test from their forthcoming debut album “LANY” that will have you humming along for months. It’s a nostalgic themed dance track that encompasses their dreamy, summer vibe and distinctive LANY sound through and through, so if you love their other tunes, you’ll love this.

Good Girls” is a keyboard driven jam, with a toe tapping electronic beat and funky guitar riffs. Lead singer Paul Klein sings with an air of easy breezy coolness while pining after an ex, with shards of disappointment coming through the title drop. “Good girls don’t exist, but I expected more than this,” Paul sings before launching into the chorus that will have you falling in love with the heart throb all over again. Need more? The band is releasing their self -titled debut album on June 30th this year! You can preorder it on Itunes now, and in the mean time keep yourself happy with their three EPs, I Loved YouMake Out and Kinda.

Drops: RAAVE TAPES

By Andrew Brassington

thumbnail_raave-tapes-2-u-premiere

Novocastrian dance rockers RAAVE TAPES have dropped their latest single titled ‘2 U xoxo’ hot off the bat from their self-titled debut EP and appearances at festivals like This That and Mountain Sounds.

‘2 U xoxo’ is 2 minutes and 45 seconds of gritty dark dance topped with a dynamic earwormy chorus. RAAVE TAPES make music in the vein of dance punk conossieurs like Death From Above 1979, DZ Deathrays and Crystal Castles and are often referred to around town as ‘EDM on guitars’. Armed with enough guitar effect pedals to cover a king sized bed, frontman Joab Eastley sings in flamboyant bursts about modern dating and how annoying it is that good looking people don’t have to be able to dance.

You can catch RAAVE TAPES tearing it up live over the next two months (dates below) and hear ‘2 U xoxo’ right here.

Pass the Mic: Josh Aldred

By Gabrielle Zgrajewski

One musician to keep an eye out for is the British Brisbane boy Josh Aldred as he releases his new single “Grey and Old”.

Releasing his single only yesterday, the 18 year old musician is promising as he has played many gigs within both Brisbane and the UK as well as had the odd interview of what is to come next.

Aldred’s single “Grey and Old” is the debut of his professional work, with a sweet and light guitar riff, accompanied by his voice. The sound of the guitar is complimented by the vocal as it creates a great melody for an acoustic song, with a good balance between the two mediums.

Check out the music video for the song below and click here for his Facebook page.

Drops: Ali Barter

By Portia Hampson

600b

Incase you missed it on Tuesday night, Ali Barter dropped into the Triple J studios to talk about her first full length album ‘A Suitable Girl’ and to premiere her latest pop rock single “Cigarette”.

Ali spoke about her biggest inspirations Kylie Minogue and Madonna and how they’ve influence her. But her most noted influence for her current record title is based off a book called A Suitable Boy written by Vikram Seth.

It’s a beautiful story about a girl who comes of age and has to find a husband. I loved this book and I was writing all these songs and realising all these songs were kind of about me finding my place, learning acceptance, being angry, being a girl, and being OK with that. All the stuff that is growing up.- Ali Barter

‘A Suitable Girl’ is Ali’s rawest work and we can’t wait to hear the entirety of the record!

Barter also stated she imagines her record to be the background of a romantic movie soundtrack, with each song scoring their own scene. She explained where the placing of cigarette would be in her imaginary romantic movie and quite frankly, we agree.

“It’s the beginning, it’s like the frustration. There’s a [couple] and they’re having this relationship and in love. Then the first thing happens and someone gets pissed off and then it leads to the big fight. So it’s kind of like a third of the way in, it’s when trouble’s brewing” Ali said.

We can all feel that Barter’s record is going to make many headlines over the next year and maybe even a few romantic movie appearances?

‘A Suitable Girl’ is out March 24th
